In a small abandoned tavern, a door was blasted open. A girl ran in frantically and plopped down at the nearest table, tears streaming down her face. She looked troubled, as if an internal war was going on inside her. She hesitated for a moment, the former balance of the two sides now tipping and finally, with discrete determination, banged her fist on the table.

She scrawled something into the dust of the table before she got up and left. It said:

The Third World is coming.

.04 Rising

A week of training had left Hannah tired but fulfilled. Her hair was now bleached white, her pupils dyed to be purple. She had a somewhat naive air to her, but she didn’t stand out too much anymore. You could say that she had finally become a part of the slums. And Hannah was enjoying it.

Other than changing her appearance, she mostly had history lessons, exercise sessions and some strolls around the block to get use to thee dark world. Hannah was curious as to why she needed to be more fit, wasn’t she suppose to sit around all day? That was what a queen did right? But when she asked Richard, he only shook his head and diced out two familiar words:

“You’ll see.”

Hannah was somewhat frustrated by the fact that she wasn’t allowed to know, but later she thought that maybe Richard was trying to surprise her. At that thought, all her curiosity vanished and she was content with her daily routine.

But a week later, Richard came in and told her that they wouldn’t be training today.

“Why?”

“Because today’s going to be your big day.”

Hannah tilted her head slightly, staring up at him with questioning eyes.

“I thought you said we had three more weeks.”

Richard laughed slightly, his face glowing with excitement.

“Well, you’re doing better than I thought. We’ve a perfect time to rise to power. We’ve got to catch it.”

“What?”

“Remember when I told you about the freelancers?”

Hannah stopped to think for a minute, digging through her small mind for the word.

“They were the people who wouldn’t let you attack the domes.”

Richard nodded.

“Well, they’re headquarters just imploded, which means they won’t try to interfere with our plan.”

“Our plan? What plan?” Hannah looked at him bewildered.

“You as queen! Then we’ll lead a revolt and no one will ever have to live in this dark place anymore!”

“But…” Hannah looked frighten for a moment. “I don’t want to revolt. It’s so scary.”

Richard rested a hand on her shoulder and flashed a reassuring smile.

“Don’t worry, you’re the queen. Remember? Queen’s are always protected.”

Hannah’s eyes lit up and she nodded eagerly.

“Of course! I forgot.”

Richard chuckled lightly.

“Now, for today, you have to listen to my directions. If I don’t tell you to do something, don’t do anything.”

Hannah nodded and Richard lead her out, a content smile on his face.

With the long wait over, her once swollen cheek was now down to it’s normal size. Everyday, the salon women had filled Sarah with bits and pieces of what happened during the years that she left. It was interesting to hear as an outsider to hear what went on in the slums, but most of the times though, she was just glad that she had left.

Last night, the salon women came in and told her that she was finally allowed to leave. So this morning, she woke up nice and early, her little amount of belongings all packed and ready to leave. She was about to leave when she spied a note on her table.

Sarah,

By the time you’re awake, I am probably no longer here. I have just received news that my beloved family has been injured in an implosion of their home. I must go and visit them now that I no longer need to protect you. The streets have been rather dangerous these days. It wasn’t just because of that bruise on your face. I hope you understand.

Kyle is only 15, but he’s been said to be very manipulative. I want you to be careful when making negotiations with him. I’m sure he’s quite angry right now, so the best way would be to go along with him and then either buy your friend out or steal her away. To get to his place, you only need to continue 5 blocks down the road from the way you came here.

I wish you luck and may we all survive in our separate ways.

S.W.

Sarah stared at the note for a moment, trying to take in all of the information. What had happened? An imploding building? Did that happen often? Surely if it did, she had never seen one implode the fives years she lived here, nor had the salon woman tell her of any implosions. Something must have happened.

Sarah frowned. This meant that the slums could be even more dangerous. Just another reason why she should hurry and get Hannah out. If something happened to Hannah, her whole quest would have to considered a failure. Sarah tucked the note in her bag and promptly left the salon, hurrying down the road to the pimp’s house…..
